Real-Time Captions Not Showing? How to Fix

Product & Engineering

You’ve turned everything on, but the caption box is empty. This is a common hurdle with real-time tools. Whether you're using a browser feature or an extension, here’s how to diagnose and solve the problem.
The Most Common Culprit: Muted Audio
Most captioning tools "listen" to the audio stream. If your tab is muted, or the video player volume is at zero, the tool sees nothing to transcribe.
- Fix: Ensure the tab is not muted and the video volume is at least at 5%.
Conflicting Extensions
Do you have multiple translation or captioning extensions active at once? They might be fighting for control of the audio stream.
- Fix: Disable other similar extensions and refresh the page.
DRM Protection
Some premium streaming sites (like Netflix or certain sports broadcasters) use "Digital Rights Management" to block screen and audio capture.
- Fix: Use a tool like FlashCaption that is designed to work with high-security tab audio.
Browser Updates
Running an old version of Chrome or Edge? Modern captioning relies on recent Web Audio APIs.
- Fix: Update your browser to the latest version.
