How to Fix Live Caption Not Working on Chrome

It’s frustrating when you rely on captions and they suddenly stop appearing. Chrome's built-in Live Caption is great, but it’s not immune to bugs. If your captions have vanished, here’s the checklist to get them back.

1. Check the Global Toggle

Sometimes a Chrome update resets your settings.

  • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Live Caption and ensure it’s toggled ON.

2. Download the Speech Files

Chrome needs to download about 50MB of data for each language. If you're on a new install or just cleared your cache, it might be stuck downloading.

  • Look for a small progress bar in the bottom-left of your browser.

3. Check Site Permissions

Some sites block audio capture.

  • Click the "lock" icon in the URL bar and ensure "Sound" is allowed.

4. Hardware Acceleration

Believe it or not, your GPU settings can affect how overlays (like captions) are rendered.

  • Try toggling "Use hardware acceleration when available" in Chrome's System settings.

5. The Extension Alternative

If Chrome's native feature continues to fail, it might be time to switch to a more robust extension like FlashCaption. Extensions often have more frequent updates and better support than built-in browser features.

Don't let a technical glitch keep you in the dark. Fix it today!
